Once the heat starts giving everyone a tough time, a common sight is where people engage in a variety of behaviors just so that they can get rid of as much heat as possible. Some may drink gallons of cold drinks and juices or jump in a cool, heavenly looking pool only to sooth themselves. One appliance that actually provides true satisfaction once the temperatures have elevated, is an air conditioner. It is basically a system that helps in eliminating heat from an area where it is fixed, and provides cooling. At present it has become a necessity, especially for those countries where summers are long and torturous.
To make life easier, some people get their homes centrally air-conditioned. This enables them to have the comfort of staying in the cool even when they are in the toilet. While these are used widely all over now, it is also important to know how an air conditioner works and makes summers bearable. Air conditioners use chemicals that can easily convert from gas to liquid and vice versa. It has a mechanism consisting of a compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve and a thermostat. The compressor and condenser are located at the outside (you may have heard the compressor's sound as soon as the AC is switched on).
The chemical refrigerant enters the compressor in the form of a cool gas, where it is compressed and squeezed so that it turns into a very hot gas. This hot gas then goes through the condenser, becomes cooler and changes into a liquid. The high pressure liquid is next forced into the expansion valve from which it comes out in small amounts from the other side. The refrigerant starts to evaporate then and when it blows across the metal fins which are over the fan, it results in cooling the room. This cycle keeps being repeated, providing cooling for a long time.
